Why your ETH balance shows zero after a metamask update

After a MetaMask update, your ETH balance showing zero is usually a display issue, not lost funds. The update can reset certain wallet settings that affect how MetaMask connects to the Ethereum network or displays tokens. Your ETH remains on the blockchain, accessible from any wallet with your seed phrase.

The two most common causes

Network Disconnection

MetaMask updates sometimes switch your active network back to the default "Ethereum Mainnet" or, in rare cases, disconnect it entirely. If you were previously on a different network, such as a testnet or a Layer 2 like Arbitrum or Optimism, your ETH balance for that network will not show on the mainnet.

How to check and fix it:

1. Open MetaMask and click the network dropdown at the top left of the extension window.
2. If it shows "Ethereum Mainnet," your ETH should appear. If not, scroll through the list and select "Ethereum Mainnet."
3. If no network is selected, click "Add Network" and choose "Ethereum Mainnet" from the provided list. MetaMask will prompt you to confirm the network details - verify the chain ID is 1 and the RPC URL is https://mainnet.infura.io/v3/ followed by your project ID (or a public endpoint).
4. Once connected, your balance should refresh.

Token Visibility Reset

MetaMask hides tokens by default after an update if they were not automatically detected. This is a known behavior: the update clears the "token list" that MetaMask uses to show balances for ERC-20 tokens or ETH on certain networks. Your ETH itself is always visible on the mainnet, but if you hold ETH on a Layer 2 network (like Arbitrum or Optimism), those balances may disappear from view.

How to check and fix it:

1. On the mainnet, your ETH balance should always show. If it does not, proceed to the next step.
2. Click "Import Tokens" at the bottom of the MetaMask window.
3. For ETH on a Layer 2, you need to add the token contract address manually. This address is specific to the wrapped ETH on that network - find it from the official bridge documentation for that Layer 2.
4. Paste the address, confirm the token symbol, and click "Add." The balance will appear.

Less common but possible causes

Seed phrase re-import issue

If the update prompted you to re-import your wallet (rare but possible after a major version upgrade), and you entered a different seed phrase or made a typo, you would see a zero balance on a different account. Your original funds are still on the blockchain, associated with the correct seed phrase.

How to verify:

1. Write down the seed phrase you entered during the update.
2. Use a separate, trusted wallet (like a hardware wallet or a fresh MetaMask installation on another device) and try to restore with that seed phrase. If it shows a zero balance, you have the wrong phrase.
3. Locate your original seed phrase from your backups. Restore MetaMask with that phrase. Your balance will return.

Account Index Mismatch

MetaMask can create multiple accounts (addresses) from a single seed phrase. The update might have switched your active account to account 2, 3, or higher, while your ETH sits in account 1 (the first one derived from the seed).

How to fix:

1. Click the account icon at the top right of MetaMask.
2. Select "Create Account" (this does not create a new account - it cycles through the list). Alternatively, click the three dots next to your account name and choose "Account Details."
3. Scroll through the list of accounts. Look for the one with your ETH balance. Once you find it, switch to it.

What not to do

• Do not panic. Your funds are not gone unless your seed phrase has been exposed to someone else. An update cannot delete blockchain data.
• Do not enter your seed phrase into any website, popup, or support request. MetaMask will never ask for it except during initial setup or recovery.
• Do not pay a "restoration fee" or share private keys with anyone claiming to fix the issue.

Preventing this after future updates

Before updating MetaMask in the future: - Write down the network you are currently using. - Note any custom tokens you have added. - Ensure your seed phrase backup is up to date and stored securely offline.

If none of these steps restore your balance, the issue may be on the blockchain itself - for example, a transaction you sent that moved your ETH to another address. Check your address on a block explorer like Etherscan (for mainnet) or the appropriate explorer for the network you use. If the balance shows there but not in MetaMask, the problem is purely a display issue. If it shows zero on the block explorer as well, review your transaction history.
